Tilburg: The High School was housed in the former town palace of Willem II in 1866. Vincent received lessons here from one of the best drawing teachers of that time: Constant Cornelis Huijsmans. He worked according to traditional academic rules in which the drawing was central to the perception. Strangely enough Vincent did not write a single word about his High School education in his later letters. Even more importantly, he wrote to his brother Theo from Drenthe that it would certainly have helped him if somebody had introduced him to the perspective earlier. In 'Vincent's Art Room', part of the Tilburg City Museum, you can see what art education at the end of the 19th century would have been like.
