Helvoirt: Vincent never lived in Helvoirt. He had left the parental home two years earlier and worked at Goupil Art Dealers, first in The Hague, later in London and Paris. He paid visits to the presbytery during Christmas or during the holidays. He sketched the Reformed Church where his father preached as minister. He also made drawings of Betsy Tersteeg, the daughter of his employer in The Hague. At the age of twenty Vincent was called up for selection for military service in Oisterwijk. His father arranged for a substitute which cost him quite a lot of money.
