Tilburg: The former city palace of Willem II housed the Higher Civic School in 1866. Here Vincent was taught by one of the best drawing teachers at the time: Constant Cornelis Huijsmans. He worked according to traditional academic rules, where drawing by observation was central. It is remarkable that in his later letters Vincent wrote not a word about this HBS education. Indeed, he wrote to his brother Theo that it would certainly have helped him if someone had taught him the rules of perspective earlier.
