Nuenen: After a three-month stay in Drenthe, Vincent took the train in late 1883 to Nuenen where his father had been pastor since 1882. Of course, there were financial reasons and Vincent felt lonely in Drenthe, but his decision to go to Nuenen was mainly motivated by the intention to become a true peasant painter. He was given the mangle room as his studio and his family installed a stove and provided furniture. The garden of the rectory was regularly the subject of his drawings and paintings. His work went well, but with the return home, the old tensions between him and his father flared up again.
