Artist Ilse Weisfelt drew inspiration from the workers in Van Gogh's paintings. The four pillars under the Castle-Traverse viaduct, on either side of the canal, elaborate on this theme in a contemporary form. While the pillars can be viewed individually, they also enter into a connection. "I set to work with the workers that Van Gogh was so fascinated by. These appear in different repeating patterns on the pillars. One side always shows the 'worker,' the other side is a variation on the Brabant landscape - the little church that Van Gogh often painted, wooden logs and fields. I alternate these so that when you look at the potato potter, for example, you see the fields on the other side of the canal. On the short sides of the triangles, the two sides meet, here a kind of overlap is created," says Ilse.
Besides the mural in Helmond, Ilse also collaborated on the mural of Joren Joshua in Breda. This mural was created in collaboration with Urban Matterz, Zuidlijn, Van Gogh Brabant , Gemeente Helmond and Stichting Carat.
