It takes Zundert a long time to commemorate its famous son Vincent. On the occasion of his hundredth year of birth, a stone relief is installed in the facade of Markt 26.
In that year an exhibition of Van Gogh's work from the collection of Theo's son engineer Vincent Willem van Gogh takes place in the parish house of Zundert. A second exhibition is held in 1964 at the unveiling by Queen Juliana of the Monument to the Van Gogh brothers by Ossip Zadkine. This bronze sculpture was donated by the Van Lanschot bankers. The bluestone pedestal comes from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It contains a box with soil from the clinic where Vincent was nursed. On this pedestal is a quote from Vincent's last letter to Theo: '...through my intervention you have participated in the creation of certain canvases, which, even in the upset, keep their composure.'
The sculpture of Vincent and Theo van Gogh is a statue showing Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo intimately intertwined, but abstracted. The statue by Ossip Zadkine stands on the Vincent van Goghplein in Zundert, in front of the Van Goghkerkje and not far from both their birthplaces. It was unveiled on May 28, 1964 by Queen Juliana and Zundert mayor G.J.A. Manders, in the presence of Ossip Zadkine.
