Two drawings have survived from the productive summer of 1874, when Vincent stayed in Helvoirt for several weeks. Both works are views of the village, in which the Protestant church plays a prominent role.
Since 1871, his father has been pastor of the church, which lies diagonally across from the residence.
The beautiful church under Theodorus' care has an imposing tower and is an eye-catcher in its surroundings. The Gothic cruciform church, with a fifteenth-century Romanesque base, is also called Old Nicholas Church. When the pastor takes office, however, the church is in a poor condition. That same year a grant for maintenance is applied for, after which restoration takes place in 1872. To make the restoration possible, it is decided to sell the oak choir screen from around the year 1500; it lost its function after the Reformation. In 1872, a new Bible on the pulpit is also put into use. The States Bible from 1704 was a gift from Uncle Cor to his brother Theodorus and is still there today.
The interior of the church has many authentic elements, such as the seventeenth-century pulpit on which Pastor Van Gogh addresses his congregation. The accompanying brass lectern and baptismal cup holder date from the first half of the eighteenth century. The present organ was also there in Theodorus' time and was modified during the 1872 maintenance. In the 1960s, the church was thoroughly restored.
