The Akkermolen is a so-called standard mill. Van Gogh will certainly have seen it during his childhood years in Zundert. You pass this special mill on the Van Gogh National Park Walk Zundert.
The Zundertse Akkermolen mill dates back to 1665. The standard mill is the oldest type of corn mill. This type of mill is turned entirely to the wind, using the tail of the mill.
The mill was actually in use until 1950. Since then it has been kept running by volunteer millers. Inside the mill are inscriptions of millers and servants from the year 1804.
Van Gogh's painting "Le Moulin de la Galette" shows similarities to the Akkermolen in Zundert, according to experts.
