New film with Oscar potential

To Willem Dafoe the honor of bringing Holland's pride Vincent van Gogh to life on the big screen. In the film At Eternity's Gate, we delve into the maze of thoughts, arts and inner struggles of Vincent van Gogh. Watch the trailer below.

The film is directed by Oscar-nominated writer/director Julian Schnabel. In addition to Dafoe, Oscar Isaac, Rupert Friend, Mads Mikkelsen and Emmanuelle Seigner also star in the film.

At Eternity's Gate was well received at the Venice Film Festival, which is often a yardstick for major film awards. By the way, a film about famous but complicated figures in history, always do very well at the Oscar ceremonies as well (think The King's Speech, Milk, Monster, etc). So who knows what's in store for Willem Dafoe and colleagues!

Is yet another film about Van Gogh actually necessary? After films such as Loving Vincent, Van Gogh: Painted with Words, and Vincent and Theo, at first glance it does not seem necessary. Yet director Schnabel, in conversation with de Volkskrant, thinks it is: "I know more about him than most people, presumably. Because I am a painter, since childhood, and because I have read all his letters. But if you ask me to explain my film? Impossible.' Remarkably, then, Schnabel brings out in the film that Van Gogh was murdered and did not commit suicide, which is generally thought.

The film focuses mainly on the period during which Van Gogh lived in the French village of Auvers-sur-Oise during the last months of his life. Zundert in Brabant maintains a friendly town tie - twinning - with Auvers.

At Eternity's Gate can be seen in theaters from Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019.
